Minor Surgery

Minor Surgery (sometimes referred to as Minor Operations) in primary care refers to simple surgical procedures that are performed by General Practitioners (GPs) or specially trained healthcare professionals in a primary care setting, rather than in a hospital. These procedures are typically low-risk and do not require general anesthesia. They can usually be done in a GP’s office or a local clinic with minimal equipment.

At Tavyside Health Centre, we offer the following Minor Surgery procedures:

  • Excisions of Skin Lesions – Removal of small lumps, bumps, or moles, often for diagnostic purposes or because they are causing discomfort. Please note, we cannot remove anything for cosmetic reasons.
  • Nail Surgery – Procedures to treat ingrown toenails, such as partial or complete removal of the nail.
  • Joint injection – Administering corticosteroids or other medications directly into joints to relieve pain or inflammation. Please click here for our joint injections page.
  • Incision and Drainage: Treatment of abscesses or cysts by making a small cut to drain pus or fluid.

Benefits of Minor Surgery in Primary Care:

  • Convenience: Patients can often receive treatment more quickly and closer to home, avoiding the need for hospital visits.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Reduces the burden on secondary care services and can be more cost-effective for the NHS.
  • Continuity of Care: Patients can be treated by their usual GP or a familiar healthcare provider, which can improve the overall experience and continuity of care.

Safety and Training:

GPs who perform minor surgery receive specific training to ensure they are competent in these procedures. The procedures are generally considered safe, and the GP will follow strict protocols to minimise the risk of infection and complications. Patients are also given aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.
